Can US policy move green hydrogen from future promise to current reality?

Digital in-conversation with Michelle Detwiler, Executive Director of the Renewable Hydrogen Alliance; and Stephanie Grumet, Advisor, Global Counsel USA, where they identified the most dynamic policy triggers accelerating the use of green hydrogen to achieve decarbonisation, hydrogen-related policies in the landmark infrastructure bill passed by the US Congress last year, including $8 billion in clean hydrogen grants the US Department of Energy will disburse by 2026. They also reviewed policies enabling cost recovery for utilities that produce, use and sell hydrogen, as well as carbon-emission reduction policies that further support the investment case for green hydrogen.

The discussion covered:

  • What hydrogen-based technologies can best be integrated by policies to ensure net zero commitment promises are realistic?
  • How can the $8 billion allocated in the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act passed into law in 2021 be deployed to stimulate a US hydrogen economy?
  • What state policies are already creating a conducive investment environment for green hydrogen?
  • What else can the US Congress and the Biden Administration do to further promote hydrogen investment?
