Driving forward autonomous vehicles in the UK

The UK government has committed to “making the UK the best place to trial, develop and deploy [autonomous vehicle] technology, to ensure we are among the first to realise their benefits”. Nurturing such an enabling environment, and making these ambitions a reality, will require the cooperation of industry, academics, regulators and government.

As the technology continues to develop, policymakers are looking to better understand the technological, commercial, legal and safety implications of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on British roads. A key pillar in this agenda is the work of the Law Commission, which recently published its recommendations for parliament and government to consider. In the wake of this publication, Global Counsel is pleased to invite you to a virtual discussion on ‘Driving forward autonomous vehicles in the UK’.

Megan Stagman (Senior Associate in Tech, Media and Telecoms at Global Counsel) moderated a panel discussion between some of the leading experts in this field, including:

  • Ben Loewenstein, International Policy Manager for Europe, Waymo

  • Jim Wallace, Senior Director of Business Development, Imagination Technologies

  • Chris Lane, Head of Transport Innovation, Transport for West Midlands

  • David Wong, Senior Technology and Innovation Manager, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders

  • Jessica Uguccioni, Automated Vehicles Review Lead Lawyer, Law Commission for England and Wales

During the discussion, they explored a variety of topics including: future legislative and regulatory changes; current technological capabilities versus forecasted trajectories; how to overcome potential blockers that may arise as AVs start to proliferate; and the wider ecosystem and supply chain that will support the growth of AVs in the UK.
