Future of the GOP: In-conversation with Mick Mulvaney

President Joe Biden took office in January with the hopes that his administration could overcome the partisanship that has engulfed US politics, but Washington seems to be as divided as ever. After passing his $1.9trn American Rescue Plan stimulus bill without a single Republican vote, Biden has proposed an even larger infrastructure package, which, if it passes, will likely occur using the same legislative procedure to allow the majority Party to circumvent the minority. Meanwhile, jockeying within the Republican Party for the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential race has already begun.

Mick Mulvaney represented South Carolina’s 5th congressional district from 2011 to 2017. He then joined the Trump administration, serving as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMG) as well as the Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) before being named acting White House Chief of Staff from 2019 to 2020. Appointed as US envoy to Northern Ireland late in the Trump administration, Mulvaney resigned following the January 6th attacks on the US Capitol.

Now a partner of investment management firm Exegis Capital, Mulvaney will speak with Global Counsel Chairman Peter Mandelson.

They discussed:

  • His experience working in the Trump administration, particularly as he operated in a number of different capacities.

  • His impressions of the Biden administration as it nears its first 100 days, and the administration’s key challenges in the remainder of this year.

  • Whether the pro-Trump and anti-Trump coalitions within the GOP can continue to co-exist, or whether one viewpoint will have to win out in order for Republicans to compete effectively with Democrats in 2022 and 2024.
