Will the EU tax tech companies to pay for 5G infrastructure?

General Politics

This week on Top in Tech, Senior Associate Franck Thomas joins Conan D'Arcy to unpack a new EU proposal that may fundamentally change the relationship between European telecoms and US big tech firms.

A new EU consultation is investigating whether to impose 'fair share' taxation on big tech firms to finance 5G and fibre infrastructure buildout. Telecoms say that services like Netflix are using their networks without contributing to the enormous costs of building them, while critics worry any legislation will exasperate existing tensions between the EU and the US on technology policy.

Conan and Franck the possible policy proposals, the politics and timelines for implementation and what response the Biden administration may have towards this consultation.
