Where next for UK and EU state aid policy?

The European Commission has temporarily relaxed the state aid rules determining the scope of permitted state intervention in response to covid-19. While the temporary framework applies until the end of 2020, given the depth and likely duration of the crisis the Commission will inevitably face calls to extend the provisions in some shape or form. State aid has also proven to be a major bone of contention in the ongoing Brexit negotiations, with time to reach a compromise quickly running out.

Global Counsel and Fingleton organised a webinar to discuss the future of UK and EU state aid policy. The discussion was chaired by Gregor Irwin, Chief Economist, Global Counsel and included Stephen Adams, Senior Director, Global Counsel, and David Gabathuler, Senior Adviser, Fingleton. They shared their views on the longer-term implications of the covid-19 temporary framework and the role of state aid in the UK-EU FTA negotiations.
