Doing things differently: the UK’s emerging priorities on energy policy

The UK was one of the first European countries to enshrine a carbon emissions target in law and its hosting role at COP provides a clear opportunity for it to showcase itself as a world-leader in green energy, at least matching the scale of ambition of the EU. The energy white paper certainly gives some sense of the UK’s emerging priorities and implies new focus, but it will now be for the UK to determine the instances in which it makes sense to diverge given the common net zero goal.

The GC expert panel discussed:

  • The opportunities for accelerating production and regulation of green technologies and expanding renewable capacity;
  • Changes to carbon pricing now the UK is not in the EU ETS;
  • The implications for how energy consumers and businesses' use is taxed
